Director of Emergency Services - Hospital Setting - Columbia, MO

The Director of Emergency and Trauma Services plans, organizes, directs, coordinates, and evaluates care and staffing for the Emergency Department. Evaluation of staffing includes planning for the next shift. Responsible for developing strategic goals for the department/service grouping as well as fiscal year business plans required to achieve such goals. The Director is the key person who translates strategies into day-to-day operations assuring standards of nursing process, care, treatment, and services are followed and unit specific policy and procedure reflect current facility practice and nursing best practices. Responsible for directing and evaluating the provision of patient care, treatment and services in the department. Key functions of the position include planning, leading, organizing, directing, and evaluating. Accepts 24-hour accountability for areas of responsibility. Ensures compliance with regulatory agencies impacting nursing care. Develops, implements, and monitors objectives and goals to integrate technical and human resources to support organization’s mission. Provides direction, support and guidance to the staff and demonstrates positive role model in response to questions, issues or concerns raised by staff, family or physicians during tour of duty.

Education:

  • Associate degree in Nursing from an accredited School of Nursing; BSN preferred.

Experience:

  • Two years of experience in a hospital ER setting and minimum of one (1) year supervisory experience preferred
  • Evidence of excellent interpersonal skills, self-directed, excellent time management and problem solving skills.
  • Evidence of the analytical skills necessary in order to solve technical, clinical, administrative, and managerial problems.
  • Requires professional level of knowledge in emergency room/trauma nursing operations with relatively complex plans, systems, and programs.
  • Requires evidence of communication skills necessary to interpret hospital policies effectively.
  • Ability to make presentations to hospital senior management
  • Manage the performance of employees within a large or diverse department
  • Evidence of independent decision making requiring definition of the possible choices from broad information where the alternatives and implications may be unclear.
  • Specific knowledge of NIMS and Emergency Preparedness.
  • Specific knowledge of American College of Surgeons Trauma Designation requirements.

Special Skills & Qualifications:

  • 1 to 2 years of previous management/leadership experience.
  • At least 5 years of ER RN experience.

Licenses / Certificates:

  • Current State licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Missouri.
  • Obtain TNCC, BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification within first 90 days of employment.
  • Maintains Trauma education as required for trauma program manager and department.
